For so many, the holidays are a time of fun and festivities, a time of joy and of happiness that may offer the relished opportunity to relax, unplug, and spend some quality time with friends and family. But sadly for others, it is much more a time when feelings of stress, of being overwhelmed, and heartbreak are dominant The blues, or these negative feelings, are often heightened by life occurrences that can trigger such emotions, e.g. the sudden loss of life by a loved one, failing or failed significant relationships, and/or inopportune financial troubles. Life can, in so many different ways, derail even the most steady train.
Anyone finding themselves consumed by the holiday blues–whatever the reason–should prepare to mount a strong challenge to eliminate these powerful negative emotions. How? Self-care is a formidable weapon! That’s right. Make the things that bring you happiness and that are feasible for your lifestyle your #1 priorities.
Some readily accessible examples could include spending more time outdoors in nature, relaxing and being pampered in multiple spa visits, and choosing among the many popular and exciting movies available during this season. Also, do not neglect opportunities to savor and to enjoy some of your favorite foods and meals, to get in some vigorous exercise when possible, and to capitalize on every chance for downtime that offers sleep, rest and rejuvenation.
You must also commit to give yourself permission to step away whenever you begin to feel an invasion from the blues. The points of attack are many and come often without warning, perhaps from a social event, family members, friends, or even social media or its content. Ways to fight back could include volunteering–donating some of your time to help others. This season is a great time to focus on gratitude and to remind yourself of all that is good and positive in your life and to be thankful! If you find it particularly challenging to feel gratitude or to consider changes in the new year, remember seeking professional help is never a bad option for additional support. Just refuse to give in to the holiday blues! COMBAT IT!!
